This week, Art Film Fest International Film Festival (Friday 17 – Saturday 25 June), one of Slovakia’s most significant cultural events, is screening award-winning drama Lies My Father Told Me as part of retrospective Jan Kadár in Exile. This is a moving coming-of-age tale about a jewish boy who grows up in 1920s Montreal, with a grandfather who tells stories, and a father who won’t work.
Directed by Mike Hodges, starring Sam J. Jones and Max von Sydow, and with a soundtrack created by Queen, 1980’s cult sci-fi adventure Flash Gordon is screening in Bologna, Italy at Biografilm Festival, organised by Associazione Fanatic About Festivals on Sunday 19 June. The comic strip screen adaptation follows a football player and his friends, who travel to another planet and find themselves fighting a tyrant to save Earth.
Michelangelo Antonoini’s The Passenger is back on the big screen on Wednesday 22 June, screening at Le Confort Moderne in Poitiers, France. This chilling drama about a journalist, played by Jack Nicholson, who exchanges identities with a dead man, was nominated for a Palme d’Or at the time of its release in 1975. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw calls it “a classic of a difficult and alienating kind, but one that really does shimmer in the mind like a remembered dream.”
In a tribute to Sam Peckinpah, Moscow International Film Festival ‘Mediafest’ (Thursday 23 June – Saturday 2 July) is screening offbeat western Major Dundee. The film stars Richard Harris and Charlton Heston in a story about a Union officer in charge of a jail in the Southwest, where the prisoners become part of the Union troops against renegade Apaches.
Finally, audiences around the UK will be treated to a ‘One-Day Special’ of Disney’s family favourite Tinker Bell and The Great Fairy Rescue – screening at selected Cineworld venues on Saturday 18 June. Featuring the voices of Michael Sheen and Lucy Liu, this animated gem tells the story of a lonely little girl who befriends the fairy Tinker Bell.
